Three Camps People Fit into When Changing Careers After Fifty

blog Apr 07, 2026

Figuring out remote work or starting something new in today’s digital economy can feel like trying to find your footing on unfamiliar terrain. There are so many directions you could take, and without a clear starting point, it’s easy to feel stuck, overwhelmed, or unsure if you even belong in the conversation. Are you starting over? Are you behind? Or are you simply in a season of change that hasn’t been clearly defined yet?

That’s exactly what inspired this conversation. After years of working with thousands of people inside Remote Work School™, Camille realized that the real challenge isn’t just learning new skills or navigating technology. It’s understanding where you are on the journey. Because when you don’t know where you stand, every option feels equally confusing, and every path feels uncertain.

So instead of treating remote work like a one-size-fits-all solution, she introduces a different way to think about it. Imagine your journey like a series of camps along a trail. Each one has its own purpose, its own pace, and its own priorities. You don’t have to visit every camp, and you certainly don’t have to stay in one forever. But knowing which one you’re currently in can give you clarity, direction, and a much more grounded way to move forward.

What follows are the three camps most people fall into, along with how to recognize yourself in each one and what that means for your next step.

The Reinventor

The Reinventor is on a conscious journey of change. This isn’t about small tweaks or side interests. This is about stepping into a new identity, often after years or even decades in a different role.

This person is asking deeper questions. Who am I now? What do I want next? How do I take everything I’ve done and translate it into something new?

You might recognize yourself here if you’re:

  • Leaving a long-term career and unsure how to reposition your experience
  • Re-entering the workforce in a completely different way
  • Rebuilding or reimagining a business for the digital world
  • Feeling the need to update not just your skills, but how you present yourself

A key theme for the Reinventor is identity. It’s not just about learning something new. It’s about allowing yourself to be seen in a new way. That might mean updating your resume, changing how you describe your work, or even claiming a new role before you feel fully “ready.”

Camille shares the idea that reinvention often starts by stepping into the identity first. Much like public figures who evolve over time, the shift begins when you allow yourself to embody what’s next, not just what’s been.

What this path can look like:

  • Conducting a skills inventory and identifying transferable strengths
  • Repackaging experience into consulting, coaching, or advisory work
  • Exploring part-time or small-scale business ideas rather than building something massive
  • Integrating new tools like AI to modernize your skill set

Where crossover can happen:
Reinventors often overlap with Lifelong Learners because learning is required to grow into the new identity. They may also have Income Seeker tendencies, but if reinvention is the dominant driver, they typically have a bit more time and space to build intentionally rather than urgently.

The Lifelong Learner

The Lifelong Learner is driven by curiosity, growth, and engagement. This is someone who wants to stay mentally active, relevant, and connected to what’s happening in the world.

They’re not necessarily trying to become someone entirely new. Instead, they’re expanding who they already are.

You might identify with this camp if you:

  • Feel energized by learning new tools, especially technology
  • Want to stay engaged and connected as life evolves
  • Enjoy trying new platforms, ideas, or creative outlets
  • Are motivated by growth more than immediate results

A powerful example Camille shares is her stepmother, who decided in her late seventies to seriously pursue acting again. Learning video tools, building a website, experimenting with AI, and putting herself out there didn’t come from necessity. It came from desire, curiosity, and a willingness to grow.

That’s the essence of the Lifelong Learner. It’s not about pressure. It’s about possibility.

What this path can look like:

  • Exploring new technologies and tools without needing immediate mastery
  • Trying different forms of online work like teaching, content creation, or community engagement
  • Combining part-time work with ongoing learning
  • Gradually turning interests or skills into income streams

Where crossover can happen:
Lifelong Learners often overlap with Reinventors when their curiosity leads to bigger identity shifts. They may also drift into Income Seeker territory if they decide to monetize what they’re learning, but income is typically not the primary driver.

The Income Seeker

The Income Seeker has a clear and immediate priority. Generating income.

This doesn’t mean desperation, but it does mean focus. Whether it’s supplementing retirement, preparing for a transition, or creating breathing room financially, the goal is practical and time sensitive.

You might fall into this camp if you:

  • Need to earn income within the next few months
  • Want simple, reliable ways to bring in money
  • Prefer low-pressure, flexible work options
  • Are less interested in long learning curves or major reinvention right now

One of the most important distinctions Camille makes here is the difference between needing income and wanting income. If you truly need it soon, that becomes your priority. And that means temporarily setting aside the urge to explore endlessly or reinvent completely.

This is about stabilizing first.

What this path can look like:

  • Part-time remote roles such as customer support or administrative work
  • Freelance or contract projects with quick turnaround
  • Virtual assistant work or simple service offerings
  • Monetizing hobbies or existing skills in straightforward ways
  • Affiliate or referral-based income streams

She shares the story of someone who taught art classes in person and eventually realized those same skills could be turned into online courses that generated income without constant effort. That shift didn’t require a full reinvention. It simply required recognizing the value of what already existed.

Where crossover can happen:
Income Seekers often have traits of both other camps. They may want to learn or reinvent, but those desires must take a back seat until income is stabilized. Once that happens, they can expand into either path more freely.

Key Takeaways

  1. Clarity starts with identifying where you are, not where you think you “should” be
  2. You can relate to all three camps, but one will usually be your dominant driver
  3. Your dominant camp should guide your immediate decisions and priorities
  4. Reinvention requires identity shifts, not just new skills
  5. Lifelong learning thrives on curiosity, not pressure or urgency
  6. If you need income soon, focus and simplicity matter more than exploration
  7. You are allowed to move between camps as your life and priorities evolve

There’s something incredibly freeing about realizing you don’t have to do this the “right” way. You just have to do it your way, based on where you are right now. That alone can lift a huge weight off your shoulders.

You are not behind. You are not too late. And you are certainly not without value. Everything you’ve done up to this point has given you skills, perspective, and experience that still matter. The key is learning how to use them in a way that fits this season of your life.

And maybe most importantly, you don’t have to have it all figured out before you begin. You just need a starting point. One decision. One direction. One step that aligns with where you are today.

That’s where Remote Work School™ comes in. Whether you’re reinventing yourself, exploring what’s possible, or simply looking to create more income and flexibility, there is support, guidance, and a path forward waiting for you.

You are more capable than you think. And this next chapter might just be the one where everything you’ve learned finally comes together in a way that feels aligned, meaningful, and fully your own.
